Deep well and Dewatering
The NCS Fluid Handling Systems service team was recently dispatched to a deep well dewatering project. In this case the project was to assist with ground water flow data for future industrial development. This valuable ground water data will form an integral part of the projects ground water management strategy and dewatering program, as well as potential water treatment and disposal. The NCS Fluid Handling Systems engineering design team was also on site to access and advise the EPC team on the various dewatering and water treatment options. These projects typically have a investigative phase, a design phase based on the data gathered and a operational phase. NCS Fluid Handling Systems team supports all phases from the onset to construction.
The NCS PEng's & designers are experienced in reading geological reports & interpreting hydrology which provides our clients with a calculated subsurface water management plan. During the discussions it was determined that a combination of deep wells and wellpoints would serve the project nuances the best and provide ease of access during construction as well as the best water treatment option for ground constituents that may excess the discharge criteria set up. Total suspended solids (TSS) were determined not to be an issue since NCS would be using their wellpoint dewatering methodology. The NCS designers used the flow data to calculate the various flows to put the dewatering systems in the optimum zone for “area of influence” AKA “Radius of Influence”.
In some areas of this large construction site the flow data and depth of excavations determined that well point dewatering may not be optimal and, in this case, the NCS Fluid Systems engineers recommended the use of deep well submersible pumps to manage the dewatering. Deep Well Dewatering is the option that NCS offers for applications where the site has tight construction space limitations or excavations deeper than the effective capability of vacuum type well-points. The NCS dewatering designers still calculate the optimum “area of influence” or “radius of Influence” & recommend the placement of multiple pumping wells in an effective configuration with properly sized deep well submersible pumps.
Like Well Point Dewatering, Deep wells enable excavations to be made safer for entry and excavation and are effective for applications such as excavations for pipelines, foundations, basements and HDD Bore pits. Just like Well point dewatering, Deep-well dewatering will assist in stabilizing the slope of an excavation and allow proper compaction of backfill for underground utilities. The most common form of deep well pumping is by electric submersible pumps, which are lowered inside a screen so water can flow unobstructed. Large drawdowns can be achieved, depending on the number and depth of the wells drilled and hydrogeological conditions. To create the necessary “cone of depression,” several wells are drilled in accordance with the engineered dewatering plan and fitted with properly sized submersible pumps. In combination these pumps work together and create a hydraulic gradient drawing down ground water across all the wells.
NCS Fluid Handling Systems has one of the largest privately owned and maintained fleets of well point dewatering support equipment in the region with over 25 speciality dewatering pumps, 4 hydraulic drive auguring systems, numerous water jet systems and a massive number of points and header located strategically across all 5 of our branch locations and on project sites across Canada. In the past 18 months NCS Fluid Handling Systems has invested in a large variety of deep well dewatering pumps.
